Replace the parameter map, not the part number. A drop-in with 10× the ESR turns a 0.50 damping ratio into 0.70 and lifts the capacitor's share of a 470 W snubber load from 20 W to 147 W. Match C, V, ESR(f), ESL, tanδ, TCC and PD at 20 kHz, then revalidate the system against overshoot, PD and filter-corner criteria.
- Write the substitution map from C through creepage before you order
- Match ESR(f) and ESL, because they set snubber damping and ring frequency
- Require PD below 5 pC under pulsed stress, not only a hi-pot pass
- Revalidate the system: overshoot, corners, PD margin, temperatures
- Qualify the second source with accelerated life and PD testing
Abstract
Imported laser power supplies carry long lead times and obsolescence risk, and a naive replacement fails on parameters beyond capacitance and voltage. This article gives the full substitution parameter map, the damping and filter-corner arithmetic, four failure modes of naive substitution, six co-design steps, and the system-level acceptance criteria a replacement must meet.
1. Introduction
Laser marking machines built or maintained outside the original supply chain depend on imported high-voltage capacitors: Japanese screw-type parts in Q-switch drivers, European film parts in DC links, and special ceramics in DUV systems. Lead times, exchange-rate exposure and obsolescence risk all land on the maintenance account.
A capacitor that reaches end of life and cannot be reordered for six months costs six months of machine output. Domestic replacement is the practical answer, and the engineering work is to match the original part's parameter set, and the label is the least useful part of it.
The original parameters sit inside the surrounding circuit. Snubber damping, filter corners, PD margins and thermal limits all assume the original ESR, ESL, TCC and PD behaviour. A replacement that matches only capacitance and voltage leaves every one of those assumptions unchecked.
This article gives the substitution parameter map, the circuit arithmetic behind it, four failure modes seen after naive substitutions, six co-design steps, and the system criteria that close the loop.

2.1 The electrical parameter set
A capacitor's role in a circuit comes from more than capacitance and voltage. The substitution map covers the full set.
{C, V_rated, ESR(f), ESL, tanδ, TCC, PDIV, PD@V_rated, insulation_R, thermal_R, package, creepage}
where C is capacitance, V_rated is the rated voltage, ESR(f) is the frequency-dependent series resistance, ESL is the series inductance, tanδ is the loss factor, TCC is the temperature coefficient of capacitance, PDIV is the partial-discharge inception voltage, and insulation_R and thermal_R are the insulation and thermal resistances.
2.2 Damping ratio and ring frequency
ESR and ESL set the snubber's damping ratio and the frequency at which the switch node rings.
ζ = (R_snubber + ESR) / (2 × √(L_total / C))
where ζ is the damping ratio, R_snubber is the series snubber resistor, ESR is the capacitor's series resistance, L_total is the loop inductance, and C is the snubber capacitance. With 4.4 Ω of snubber resistance, 0.2 Ω of ESR and a 4.6 Ω characteristic impedance the design sits at ζ = 0.50. A replacement with 2 Ω of ESR moves that to 0.70 and changes the overshoot from 16 % to 4 %.
f_ring = 1 / (2π √(L × C))
where f_ring is the ring frequency, L is the loop inductance in henries, and C is the capacitance in farads. A 2 nF node with 8 nH rings at 40 MHz; doubling the ESL to 16 nH pulls the ring to 28 MHz and can move a filter anti-resonance into a measurement band.
2.3 Filter corner drift
The temperature coefficients of the capacitor and the series resistor move the filter corner together.
Δf_p / f_p = −(TCC + TCR) × ΔT
where Δf_p / f_p is the fractional shift of the corner frequency, TCC and TCR are the temperature coefficients of the capacitor and the resistor, and ΔT is the temperature change. An N4700 part at ±30 ppm/°C holds the corner inside 0.2 % over 60 °C, while an X7R replacement drifts about 15 % and takes the EMC margin with it.
2.4 Stored energy and the substitution arithmetic
The pulse energy and the time constant of the replaced stage set the new part's pulse duty.
E = ½ C V²
where E is the stored energy, C is the capacitance and V is the voltage. A 470 pF part at 10 kV stores 23.5 mJ. With C in microfarads and V in kilovolts the result comes out in joules; with C in nanofarads and V in kilovolts it comes out in millijoules.
τ = R C
where τ is the discharge time constant, R is the loop resistance and C is the capacitance. With R in kilo-ohms and C in nanofarads the result is in microseconds, so a 4.4 Ω snubber against 470 pF discharges in 2 ns.
Fig. 1 — Matching capacitance and voltage alone moves damping, ring frequency and filter corner, so acceptance moves from the datasheet to the system.
3. Points faibles en matière d'ingénierie
Pain Point 1: Same capacitance, different ESR
A Q-switch snubber part is replaced with equal C and V but 10× the ESR and 2× the ESL. The damping ratio leaves the designed 0.50 and reaches 0.70, the switch node rings at 28 MHz instead of 40 MHz, and the ringing stresses the MOSFET and couples into the marking beam. The machine develops intermittent faults after a successful substitution.
Pain Point 2: Same voltage, lower PD margin
The replacement passes the hi-pot test, and its PD behaviour under 20 kHz pulsed stress is worse than the original. Internal discharge erodes the dielectric over months, the capacitor fails, and the failure is blamed on domestic parts. The real cause is a substitution that never measured PD under real stress.
Pain Point 3: Same package, unstated TCC
A filter capacitor is replaced with an equal-package part whose TCC never enters the specification. The corner drifts with temperature, the EMC margin collapses at the hot end of the day, and the machine fails its periodic EMC retest.
Pain Point 4: A second source with different aging
The maintenance pool ends up holding original and replacement parts. The two populations age at different rates, the array sharing drifts, and the failure statistics become unmatchable. Without a controlled qualification program the second source creates a reliability discontinuity.
4. Étapes de conception
Strategy 1: Build the substitution map first
Document the original part's full parameter set from the datasheet or from measurement. Require the replacement to match each parameter inside the tolerance the circuit function demands, and treat the map as the substitution specification.
Strategy 2: Match the loss and temperature behaviour
Installez N4700 (T3M) Class I parts: a SrTiO3 dielectric with tanδ at or below 0.1 %, a temperature coefficient of ±30 ppm/°C, 1 kV to 100 kV ratings and PD below 5 pC. Snubber damping and filter corners then stay where the original design put them. A condensateur à film carries the same temperature drift as the imported part.
Strategy 3: Revalidate the system
Run double-pulse tests for snubber behaviour, insertion-loss sweeps for the filters, pulsed-PD measurement for the high-voltage stages, and EMC measurement in every mode. Acceptance uses system criteria: overshoot, PD, corners, temperatures.
Strategy 4: Replace subsystems with a matched set
Swap complete subsystems: capacitors for filtering and snubbing, résistances de gradation for sampling and absorption, and diode à récupération rapide parts for clamping. One validated subsystem removes the per-part interaction risk that single swaps accumulate.
Strategy 5: Qualify the second source
Run accelerated thermal-cycle, ripple and pulsed-PD tests on the replacement population. Confirm that its life and failure modes match the original's before the parts enter the maintenance pool, so the pool stays one population.
Strategy 6: Record the substitution and trend the field data
Log the change in the machine configuration record, and trend capacitance, leakage, PD and case temperature at service visits. A flat trend validates the map; a rising trend means the map was incomplete.

5. HVC capacitors for substitution programs
Three properties decide whether a replacement keeps the original circuit behaviour: loss factor, temperature stability and PD integrity. HVC builds N4700 parts for all three.
Six paramètres importants ici
- tanδ at or below 0.1 % matches the best imported Class I parts and improves on imported Class II parts in loss and drift.
- ±30 ppm/°C holds the filter corner inside 0.2 % over 60 °C, which keeps the EMC margin where the original design left it.
- 1 kV to 100 kV with HVCT8G screw-type and disc-type packages covers DC-link, pump-driver, Q-switch and Pockels-cell positions.
- PD below 5 pC at rated voltage under pulsed stress, verified by full-lot testing, removes the failure mode that defeats naive substitution.
- Combined with HVR precision thick-film resistors and HVC protection diodes, one validated subsystem replaces snubbing, filtering, sampling and clamping together.
- Field record: an HVC 40 kV / 441 screw-type capacitor qualified as a drop-in replacement for Japanese Murata parts in lithography light-source field repair, and the same construction matches the electrical parameters of références croisées candidates from Murata, TDK and Vishay.
Livraison et support
Standard parts ship in 4–8 weeks and matched stacks in 6–10 weeks. Manufacturing runs from a 6,000 m² owned factory in Dongguan, so the second source is a factory, with production control behind it.
Send the original part number, its measured parameter set and the circuit function. HVC returns a substitution map with the matched parameters marked, plus samples for double-pulse and pulsed-PD validation within two weeks.
6. Questions fréquentes
Q1: Is a replacement with the same capacitance and voltage safe?
Only if the remaining parameters match. A part with 10× the ESR moves the damping ratio from 0.50 to 0.70, and 2× the ESL pulls the 40 MHz ring down to 28 MHz.
Q2: Which parameters need a measurement instead of a datasheet entry?
ESR at the operating frequency, ESL and PD at rated voltage under pulsed stress. Datasheet ESR at 1 kHz tells nothing about behaviour at 20 kHz, and PD needs the real waveform.
Q3: Why does PD matter if the hi-pot test passes?
A hi-pot test proves the part survives one overvoltage. PD below 5 pC proves no internal discharge erodes the dielectric over months of 20 kHz pulsed duty, which is the failure that shows up in the field.
Q4: How much energy does a 470 pF part store at 10 kV?
E = ½CV² gives 23.5 mJ. The same formula returns millijoules when the capacitance is in nanofarads and the voltage in kilovolts, and joules when the capacitance is in microfarads.
Q5: What is the acceptance criterion for a substitution?
Four system numbers: overshoot at or below 80 % of the device rating, PD below 5 pC under pulsed stress, filter corners inside ±5 % across temperature, and case temperatures inside the derated limits in the worst mode.
Q6: How is a second source qualified?
Accelerated thermal cycling, ripple testing and pulsed-PD testing on a sample population, followed by a life comparison against the original. The parts enter the maintenance pool only after that evidence exists.
